Keep up to date with all the latest news happening in school at the moment.
Congratulations to Hawthorns!
Winners of the ODBST Sumdog Competition
Year 5 and 6 had been practising their times table for accuracy at top speed to take part in the Sumdog competition with other schools in the Traust. Against tough odds being the smallest school and class taking part we were delighted to win - all our hard work came to fruition. We are looking forward to our next competition in a few weeks agains some of the schools in Buckingham.
Hawthorns took on the challenge of walking a mile in memory of Captain Sir Tom Moore. The children in school walked around the village and also visited the park halfway through our walk. Once we had returned to school we had actually managed to walk 1.7 miles in total.
The children who are learning at home put their own twist on remembering Captain Sir Tom Moore alongside walking a mile and created medals from clay, posters, songs, poems and much more!
This week at Great Horwood School we are having a week with a very different feel to it. It is Children's Mental Health week and we have planned a whole host of calming and relaxing activities for the children (and their parents and grandparents) to join in with.
We know how challenging it is for everyone at the minute - and home schooling is not easy for any of us. It is important to take a few minutes each day to look after ourselves.
For ideas, help and support please visit our Children's Mental Health section on the Curriculum pages.
Thank You!
We have just received our Poppy Appeal certificate for November 2020. We raised an amazing £155.29 to support the Roayl British Legion - all contributions help the British Legion to support the armed forces community past and present.
EVERY POPPY COUNTS!
A huge thank you to everyone who supported our Book Fayre over the last few weeks. Mrs Allison has done an amazing job in organising all the children to visit whilst maintaining safety and quarantining books in between visits. Almost £550 of books were ordered which has resulted in the School receiving £270.00 worth of fiction books for classrooms. Teachers thought Christmas had come early - such excitement at choosing language rich texts and exciting stories for the children.
We couldn't have done this without you so Thankyou!
Congratulations!
Well done to Kiera for being nominated as a runner up in the MP Greg Smith's Christmas Card Competition. There was a 'wonderful array' of entries from 11 schools across the Buckingham constituency.
All the children in the class received a letter from Greg Smith which was very exciting. Greg has told the school that it was extremely difficult to choose a winner. He was very impressed by the creative idea and thought Kiera put into her design by featuring the Palace of Westminster in snow through a window.
Her design will now feature on the the back of Greg Smith's constitiuency Christmas Card. Well done to everyone who entered the competiton. Photo's are on the Christmas countdown page from 3rd December 2020.
A huge thank you to everyone for raising £70 on Friday for Children in Need. You all looked amazing in your spots! It was a great day and we had lots of fun. Year 3 and 4 took part in the BBC 5 to Thrive programme with Joe Wicks. If you would like to see him receive his Gold Blue Peter badge use the link below.

Your small act of kindness has made a huge difference!
Caring at Christmas
Home Instead Senior Care is an ambitious company whose intention is to care for the elderly in their own home. Every year they organise a Christmas card competition. Although they cover the majority of England, our cards from Hawthorn Class at Great Horwood School will be dispatched by the Buckingham and Milton Keynes branches.
There will be a winning Christmas card selected from schools in Buckinghamshire and this will be printed onto cards that will be sent to the people Home Instead care for. On the inside of our Christmas cards we had to write what we think it is like to be eighty years old.
Why did we enter? It was a fun and friendly competition against other schools and because we want to make the elderly feel appreciated after a challenging year.
We would like to enter the competition again next year as it has been very enjoyable and we do not want anyone to feel alone at Christmas. We hope our cards can put a smile on people’s faces.

In the last few weeks, Hawthorn Class have been busy planning, preparing and performing our remembrance service. We have created our own pieces of writing to reflect what Remembrance Day means to us. We also decided to include a roll call of the names of local heroes who lost their lives during the Great War, as we wanted to recognise and remember these individuals from our community. Our service was held outside in the playground, as this meant that the other bubbles in school could join us to remember those who fought so bravely for our country. In addition to our service, we have been creating a display of poppies and artwork to show our individual representations of Remembrance Day and what it means to us.
